KIIP Level 3 Grammar Explanations

Chapter 2: 포장 이사를 하는 게 좋겠어.
-(으)면 좋을까요?
- This is used when seeking advice from others.
- This is also used when asking about something very politely.
- Roughly translates to “If ~, what should I do?” -or- “If ~, what would be good?”
*This grammar form should only be used with present tense verbs.
Conjugation
When using this grammar form, you should drop the 다 and add -(으)면 좋을까요? to the end of the verb stem. See the examples below. Be sure to pay attention to whether there is a final consonant (받침) on the verb stem or not.
받침 X : 하다 ⇒ 하다 + 면 좋을까요 ⇒ 하면 좋을까요?
받침 O : 먹다 ⇒ 먹다 + 으면 좋을까요 ⇒ 먹으면 좋을까요?
*불규칙 : 만들다 ⇒ 만들다 + 면 좋을까요 ⇒ 만들면 좋을까요?
*불규칙 : 줍다 ⇒ 줍다 + 우면 좋을까요 ⇒ 주우면 좋을까요?
Sentence Examples
A: 결혼식에 무슨 옷을 입고 가면 좋을까요? (If I go to a wedding, what clothes should I wear?)
B: 정장을 입고 가세요. (You should wear a suit.)
A: 아이들이 밥을 잘 안 멱는데… (My kids won’t eat well…)
뭘 해 주면 좋을까요? (so what should I make for them?)
B: 돈가스를 해 줘 보세요. (Try making pork cutlet for them.)
A: 진수가 국어를 잘 못하는데… (Jin-Su can’t speak Korean well…)
어떻게 하면 좋을까요? (so what should I do?)
B: 학원에 보내 보세요. (Try sending him to an after-school academy.)
-는 게 좋겠어요
- This is used when you say your opinion tactfully. (This is a polite form.)
- This is also used to advise others.
- Roughly translates to “You should…” -or- “You had better do…” -or- “If you did ___ this way, that would be good.”
*This grammar form should only be used with present tense verbs.
Conjugation
When using this grammar form, you should drop the 다 and add -는 게 좋겠어요 to the end of the verb stem. With this form, you don’t need to worry about whether the verb has a final consonant (받침) or not. You simple drop the 다 from the infinitive form and add the ending. See the examples below.
하다 ⇒ 하다 + 는 게 좋겠어요 ⇒ 하는 게 좋겠어요
먹다 ⇒ 먹다 + 는 게 좋겠어요 ⇒ 먹는 게 좋겠어요
가다 ⇒ 가다 + 는 게 좋겠어요 ⇒ 가는 게 좋겠어요
보다 ⇒ 보다 + 는 게 좋겠어요 ⇒ 보는 게 좋겠어요
Sentence Examples
A: 오늘 점심에는 뭘 먹을까요? (What should we eat for lunch today?)
B: 간단하게 라면을 먹는 게 좋겠어요. (We should simply eat ramen.)
A: 우리 내년에 자동차를 바꿀까? (Shall we change our car next year?)
B: 좀 더 생각해 보고… (If you try to think about it a little more…)
천천히 결정하는 게 좋겠어요. (and decide slowly, that would be good.)
A: 무슨 일 있어요? 얼굴이 안 좋아요. (What’s the matter? Your face doesn’t look good.)
B: 네, 남편하고 싸웠어요. (Yes, I fought with my husband.)
A: 서로 생각할 시간을 갖는 게 좋겠어요. (You should take time to think about each other.)
Let’s Put It All Together!
A: 자꾸 살이 찌는데 어떻게 하면 좋을까요?
(I keep getting fat, so what should I do?)
B: 매일 아침 우동을 하는 게 좋겠어요.
(You should exercise every morning.)
A: 애들이 기침을 심하게 하는데 어떻게 하면 좋을까요?
(If my child’s cough becomes severe, what should I do?)
B: 당분간 학교에 보내지 않는 게 좋겠어요.
(For the time being, you should not send your child to school.)
